SACRESACRE

In each Local Education Authority, there is a Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education with responsibility for determining the syllabus for Religious Education in its schools, and to offer advice and guidance to schools and the Local Authority (LA) on all matters relating to Religious Education and collective worship. It is the SACRE that makes the policy as to what each LA's RE provision will actually look like for the children living in the LEA area from ages 4 -18.

The membership of the Newham SACRE comes from four constituencies creating four panels:
a) Newham Borough Councillors (6)
b) Representatives of the Teachers (6)
c) Representatives of the Church of England (6)
d) Representatives of Other Faiths (6 or larger)
Voting takes place in these four panels – each representative panel has one vote.

For other Christian denominations (non Anglicans) to be represented they have to be ‘Representatives of Other Faiths’. This panel also comprises a Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Jew, Buddhist, a pagan and a Roman Catholic. Tom Booker, our XLP worker, is part of this panel representing 'free churches'.
